The slum has been occupied by Brazilian military forces since Nov. 2010, when a major operation expelled the drug traffickers which controlled the area. Although not without problems, the occupation of the slum and the 19 "Police Pacification Units" (UPPs) in the city have been credited with drastically reducing crime statistics and are part of a plan to secure the city in the run up to the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016.
