The Brazilian Federal government expropriated another ranch owned by the Mutran family, the Castanhal Cabaceiras ranch, in October 2004, to use for agrarian reform. According to the Labor Ministry, the owner used slave labor, whose officials found it on four separate auditory raids. This is the first time land has been confiscated due to slave labor. The owner is also accused of cutting down the rainforest and annexing land illegally through the use of false documents. The ranch is 9.7 thousand hectares, which will be divided between 250 families.(Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
