The sun sets behind the Araguari River in Brazil's Amazonian state of Amapa. Six reknown Brazilian surfers participated in the "I Pororoca Surf Challenge" on the tidal bore wave of the river, known as pororoca, to see who could surf the wave the longest. The Araguari pororoca is possibly the most feared of all the Amazonian tidal bores, and local residents of the remote areas surrounding the mouth of the river always feared the thunderous waves which capsizes boats and washes away anything in its path twice daily. Thanks to a group of daring surfers, they have begun to see the wave in a different way: as a tourist attraction to generate money in one of the poorest regions of Brazil.(AustralFoto/Douglas Engle)
