Pororoca - Amazonian Tidal Bore Surfing
Read MoreSurfer Adilton Mariano raises his hands in celebration after winning the "I Pororoca Surf Challenge" on the tidal bore wave, known as pororoca, in the Araguari River of Brazil's Amazonian state of Amapa. Six reknown Brazilian surfers battled the wave in two elimination heats and one final to see who could surf the wave the longest. Mariano had record time of 34:10. The Araguari pororoca is possibly the most feared of all the Amazonian tidal bores, and local residents of the remote areas surrounding the mouth of the river always feared the thunderous waves which capsizes boats and washes away anything in its path twice daily. Thanks to a group of daring surfers, they have begun to see the wave in a different way: as a tourist attraction to generate money in one of the poorest regions of Brazil.(AustralFoto/Douglas Engle)
