The RIo de Janeiro state police, notorious for its lack of tact with slum residents, has started a new community policing program in the community which will be implemented in other areas if successful. Drug traffickers were driven out in Dec. 2008 and new, young police recruits have taken their place as the law of the land, including permanent police posts in the slum. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
