Police The day earlier, Sandro do Nascimento hijacked bus line number 174 and held it for several hours as police tried to convince him to surrender. When he agreed to surrender, police officers attempted to shoot him but ended up killing one of the passengers. The incident, broadcast on live TV in Brazil, demonstrated the incompetence of Rio's police and shocked cariocas (Rio residents), normally accustomed to such things. The event was also immortalized by the Jose Padilha film "Onibus 174" (Bus 174). (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
