Police try to reason with bus hijacker Sandro do Nascimento, pointing a gun at the head of a hostage, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 12, 2000. The bus, with 6 passengers aboard, was hijacked by Nascimento for about 4 hours after a robbery went wrong. When he agreed to surrender, police officers attempted to shoot him but ended up killing one of the passengers. The incident, broadcast on live TV in Brazil, demonstrated the incompetence of Rio's police and shocked cariocas (Rio residents), normally accustomed to such things. The event was also immortalized by the Jose Padilha film "Onibus 174" (Bus 174). (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
