Marina Silva, Environment Minister of Brazil, delivers remarks about the Amazon rain forest during a meeting at Planalto Palace in Brasilia. Silva - no relation to President Lula da Silva - resigned her position on May 13, 2008. Silva, who was looked at as a champion of environmentalists but scorned by powerful farming groups, said she stepped down due to difficulties she faced "in carrying out the national environment agenda." A devoted defender of the Amazon rain forest and close ally of the president, Silva held her post since Lula took office in 2003. (AustralFoto)
