Supporters of Álvaro Enrique Arzú Yrigoyen celebrate his apparent victory over Alfonso Portillo in the January 1996 presidential runoff election. Arzú was President of Guatemala from January 14, 1996 until January 14, 2000. He has been elected Mayor of Guatemala City on four occasions: in 1982, but was prevented from assuming office because of a coup d'état; in 1986, this time assuming and serving his mandate; again in January 2004; and he was re-elected for a third effective term in September 2007.
