Rio de Janeiro Special Forces Police (BOPE) search suspects with the help of Brazilian Navy armored vehicles during the "invasion" of the Mandela slum in October 2012. The police/military occupation of the area was the initial stage of the implementation of a "Pacification Police Unit" (UPP) in the area. Not without problems nor critics, UPPs nonetheless are credited with drastically reducing crime and securing the city in the run up to the World Cup and Olympics. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
