Dinka Herders in Sudan

The Dinka is one of the largest tribes of south Sudan, inhabiting the swamplands of the Bahr el Ghazal region of the Nile basin. They are mainly pastoral people, relying on cattle herding at riverside camps in the dry season and growing millet (Anyanjang) in fixed settlements during the rainy season. Among well-known Dinka are supermodel Alek Wek, former NBA player Manute Bol, one of the two tallest players in the league's history and current NBA player Lual Deng. A Jan. 2005 peace accord ended a 21 year civil war in Sudan, in which some 1.5 million were killed. The wat pitted the Muslim-dominated government in Khartoum against the mainly Christian and anamist south. The peace deal includes wealth and power-sharing arrangements, created a national unity government in Khartoum and gives southern Sudan a six-year period of autonomy after which it will hold a referendum on secession.
