An endangered golden lion tamarin monkey sits on a branch at the tamarin golden lion reserve about 100 miles east of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in this photo taken August 15, 2000. The species is endemic of the Southeastern of Brazil. Its distribution is limited the coastal zone in the proximities of Rio de Janeiro, and is threatened seriously due to the destruction of habitat, the Atlantic Rainforest, of which only 7 percent remains. Hoping to save to small primate from extinction a cooperative breeding program with 100 zoological parks was begun.(Douglas Engle/Australfoto)
