According to the US Energy Information Administration, net generation of electricity increased 2.1 percent from 2004 to 2005, reaching 4,055 billion kilowatthours. Coal, natural gas, and nuclear generation have in combination consistently provided about 85 percent to 88 percent of total net generation during the period 1994 through 2005. However, the trends for these three major generation sources have been different. Coal generation in 2005 grew 1.7 percent over 2004 to 2,013 billion kilowatthours. 49.7% of electricity produced in the USA come from coal.
