Students and visitors enter the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) main campus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The UERJ was one of the first universities in Brazil to adopt admittance quotas based on race. The quota system sparked a huge debate in Brazil when first implemented, since some students which benefitted from the quotas, took the place of others who scored higher on entrance exams. The would-be student left behind claimed that the constitutional "equal access to schooling" was not being obeyed. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
