Father Jose Amaro Lopes de Sousa stands in his room in Anapu, an Amazonian frontier town in the Brazilian state of Para. The town on the Trans-amazonian highway became world-famous after the murder of 73-year-old American nun Dorothy Stang in February 2005. Souza says that inspite of the attention after her death he and Church people are on constant guard. Stang, an adamant defender of the poor in the Amazon, probably did more in death than in life to help them - in the aftermath, the federal government has created environmental reserves and established a Federal Police office.(AustralFoto/Douglas Engle)
