A smouldering patch of forest near Caapiranga, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, Nov. 5, 2010. The low river levels broke the previous drought record which was set only 5 years ago, a frequency which environmental groups say are a direct result of deforestation and global warming. The dryness facilitates unintentional and intentional forest fires, like this one. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
