The region, which borders on the Roosevelt Indian Reservation, has seen a Diamond rush recently, some of which has encroached on Indian lands. In April 2004, Indians from the Cinta Larga tribe killed 29 illegal diamond diggers inside their reservation. The massacre increased tensions between Indians and miners, and federal police since have stationed about 50 officers near the reservation, and conduct raids on nearby mines. Many believe the reservation holds South America's largest diamond lodes and could possibly pay Brazil's foreign debt.(AustralFoto/Douglas Engle)
