australfoto > A street scene of Mariana, the oldest city in Minas Gerais state, founded in 1703. The soapstone relief on the doorway is by Aleijadinho. Development of the region was fueled by the discovery of gold in the 18th century, which is the reason for the multitude of colonial cities. Today the state still depends on mining, but now it is iron-ore and other industrial minerals. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)

The steam locomotive pulls the train on an 18 km section of track which was all but abandoned until renovation in 2006. The line connects the two colonial cities and has become an instant success with tourists to the area. The line is operated by mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), which is a major employer in the region with several mines and cargo railroads. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
