The trees were killed by the balsam woolly adelgid, introduced accidentally from Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. It has become an important pest of true firs and is established throughout the Fraser fir type in the southern Appalachians. It is a serious pest of natural Fraser fir and also causes considerable damage to the Fraser fir Christmas tree industry. Fraser firs only grow in the highest elevations of the Smokies and surrounding mountains. During the last 30 years, over 70 percent of the mature firs in the Smokies have been killed by the adelgid.
