The White house in Washington DC is the official residence of the President of the USA. It was designed by James Hobens and begun in 1792 on a site chosen by George Washington, who coincidentally is the only US president not to have used it. It was burned by the British in 1814 and has undergone several renovations and improvements, notably the a second floor porch balcony in 1948,the executive office in 1902 and a bomb shelter in 1952. The building is thought to have been a target of a hijacked airliner, which crashed in Pennsylvania, in 2001.(Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
