Divers help position a section of floating sewage pipe where it will be submerged, in front of the Barra da Tijuca beach in Rio de Janeiro. Several pipe sections will be joined to form an underwater sewage line to release untreated sewage into the ocean 5.5 km from the beach. While some private condominiums in the area have their own sewage treatment plants, the majority of sewage of 500,000 people flows untreated into the nearby lagoons and eventually the ocean. The underwater line will later be connected to a sewage treatment plant and a network of underground urban sewage lines, both planned. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
