Argentine Pope

A woman holds a leaflet reading "The Lord gave me Brothers" during a group therapy session for people recovering from chemical depency at the Santa Maria Madre del Pueblo Parish house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jorge Mario Bergoglio did social work in the favela, which was founded in 1968. Bergoglio was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Francis I and becoming the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years. The Santa Maria Parish continues social work in the slum, much of which is aimed at chemical dependency prevention and treatment. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
