Argentine Pope

Children play near the Santa Maria Madre del Pueblo church in the Villa 1-11-14 favela in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jorge Mario Bergoglio did social work in the favela, which was founded in 1968. Bergoglio was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Francis I and becoming the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years. The Santa Maria Parish continues social work in the slum, much of which is aimed at chemical dependency prevention and treatment. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
