Brazilian soldiers take positions in a slum of Rio de Janeiro as part of an operation to "protect" candidates on campaign for municipal elections in the city. Candidates had complained that they were now allowed to go to certain areas because of threats from drug traffickers and paramilitary groups (milicias), but few, if any took advantage of the temporarily secure areas under military occupation. The army arrived in the morning and left in the afternoon on several consecutive days. (Australfoto/Douglas Engle)
